We all love to jump into the shower, any time of the year. Summer is when a nice cool shower can be refreshing in the hot heat. Winter there’s nothing nicer than a hot, steaming shower to shake off those winter chills. How many of us spend time stood under the water, pondering ideas, mulling over plans?
How long on average would you say that YOU spend under the water, in your shower? A couple of minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes or even longer?
Including shower filter systems in your home may have a dramatic impact on your health. With the realization that more chlorine enters our body through skin absorption and inhalation of steam while showering than from drinking water, the benefits of installing shower filter systems have become very obvious. Shower water filters are one of the best and easiest ways to reduce our harmful exposure to chlorine and other tap water contaminants.
“Up to 2/3 of harmful exposure was due to skin reabsorption and inhalation of chlorine in shower water.” -American Journal of Public
Chlorine has been added to drinking water since the 1900s to control the spread of typhoid, cholera, and other diseases. Instead, chlorine reacts with organic material in water to produce hundreds of chemical by-products, dozens which have been linked to cancer, atherosclerosis and irreparable damage on the liver, nervous, and reproductive systems. Identified 15 years ago as a potential health hazard, removing chlorine from our water systems is crucial to our health.
Chlorine and other synthetic chemicals vaporize at a much lower temperature than water. The result is 70-90% of chemicals vaporized before the water even hits the ground. As we shower, we inhale all the contaminated water vapor into our lungs. Inhalation of chlorine and chemical vapors when showering is more harmful than drinking tap water directly.
The average shower is worse than drinking 6-8 cups of tap water directly. Ingested chemicals would be at least partially filtered by digestion. The lungs, however, have no such beneficial filtration system. Most people don’t realize tap water typically contains the same amount of chlorine or more in swimming pools (1 to 1.5 parts per million.) A study showed ¼ of swim team members suffer from some degree of asthma due to chlorine inhalation.
Chlorine and other water contaminants reduce the effectiveness of many shampoos, conditioners, lotions, oils & skin creams, leaving your skin dry and unnourished, not to mention the money spent on quality personal care products, wasted.
Chlorine is not harmful on its own but combines with organic compounds in our water systems (such as leaves) to make THC. This results in free radicals or oxygen-byproducts that rip electrons away from cells, a process that is attributed to the effects of the aging. By constant exposure to chlorine and chemical vapors, the aging process is significantly accelerated. Cancer, heart trouble, premature senility, both mental and physical are conditions attributable to chlorine, treated water supplies.
Installing shower filter systems is one of the best and easiest ways to reduce exposure to harmful chlorine and chemicals and tap water. These are simple & easy to install, usually done in 5-10 minutes. Some models are as easy as simply unscrewing your current showerhead, then replacing with the filter version. It’s reported that a simple water shower filter in your home can eliminate up to ninety percent of the chlorine and other harmful residues in your tap water. A combination of a drinking water filter and shower filter systems in all household shower would help. If possible, a whole house water filter would be ideal.
